FAQ’S

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stands apart as a unique ground-fighting system that focuses on controlling an opponent through technique rather than strength. It seamlessly blends grappling, judo, wrestling, and submission skills. BJJ practitioners rely on leverage, position, and precise technique to neutralize opponents, regardless of size or strength, and ultimately secure dominant control or finish with a submission.

  • Not at all. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an effective form of hands-on self-defense, accessible to everyone. While some of our dedicated fighters train multiple times a week to compete, the majority of students train for fitness, confidence, and personal growth. Whether you're looking to compete or just improve your skills, you’ll find a welcoming community at Carlson Gracie EDH. Competing is optional—joining our family is what truly matters.

  • The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu workout is unmatched in its ability to transform both body and mind. Each class engages your entire body with movements that burn calories, build muscle, and enhance functional strength. Students notice improved flexibility, speed, endurance, and overall athleticism. But beyond the physical gains, BJJ also fosters confidence, mental resilience, and a strong sense of community. It’s a full-body workout that goes far beyond the mats.

  • Not at all! No matter where you’re starting from in your fitness journey, BJJ is for everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just beginning, consistent training with us will get you in shape naturally. Your fitness level improves over time as you progress through classes, learn techniques, and build strength. The key is showing up and letting the process work for you—your transformation is inevitable.

  • On average, with consistent dedication, it takes about 10 years to earn a black belt. However, progress depends on the individual. At Carlson Gracie EDH, every belt is earned through hard work, commitment, and growth. There's no set timeline—it's about your journey, improvement, and persistence.

The Carlson Gracie Legacy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The Carlson Gracie lineage traces back to Mitsuyo Maeda of Japan, the pioneer who brought Jiu Jitsu to Brazil. Carlson Gracie Sr. became a revolutionary figure in the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a fierce competitor, reigning as world champion from the 1950s through the late 1970s. His influence remains strong today as his teachings continue to shape the sport.

Carlson’s style emphasizes technical striking and dynamic grappling with a strong focus on pressure, control, and positional dominance. His approach laid the foundation for modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, especially in competitive settings. Carlson’s academy in Rio de Janeiro became legendary, producing some of the greatest names in both Jiu Jitsu and MMA.

At Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu EDH, we are honored to carry on his legacy. We blend traditional techniques with modern advancements, focusing on mental, emotional, and physical toughness. Our training instills the core principles of Carlson’s style—ensuring our students not only learn effective self-defense but also develop the confidence and resilience to excel in all areas of life.

Professor Zach Striplin

I began my training journey when I was in Middle School, at just 11 years old. I started with wrestling and boxing. I was always wanting to be stronger and more independent, so I continually found myself seeking out new challenges.

In my teens, I started training and competing in an MMA format. Through different coaches and philosophies, I trained in multiple arts- from Jiu-jitsu, Sambo, Wrestling, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc.

My life changed unexpectedly at 22 years old. I was run over by a full-size RV while I was riding my motorcycle. I was forced to start my life over, re-learning how to walk and train again from scratch. Not long after a tough recovery process, I opened my own gym and devoted the majority of my time to Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA-based training and competing.

I’ve been a lifelong martial artist, competing and training, with close to 15 years of steady Jiu-Jitsu, and close to 20 years of Muay Thai. I have always sought out what I thought to be the most effective and important martial arts to me as an individual, gravitating toward the things that speak to me and that I truly believe in. I have traveled across the globe, from Thailand to Brazil- to compete, train, fight, and learn humbly from everyone that had something to offer.

Accolades are always nice to have, but nothing I have ever achieved compares to the relationships that martial arts has afforded me in this life. I am truly grateful for this journey.

What sets our academy apart is the combination of traditional Gracie techniques, mixed with the evolution of jiu-jitsu, to ensure all Carlson Gracie EDH students receive the best instruction.
